The Fabulous Baker Girls
People often ask me what I would be if I wasn’t a writer.
Unhappy, that’s what.
But sometimes, especially the day before a major deadline, I do fantasize about being something else. Like a baker.
I met a girl who’s making the fantasy a reality during my stop in LA. Her name is Letizia Hendrickson. She and her friend and fellow baker, Kelly Bonoli, opened Tart Bites in Encino this past January. These are two more remarkable women, like Bea Miller in my previous post, that I just gotta talk up.
Letizia and Kelly specialize in very pretty, single-bite little flavor bomb tarts like raspberry cheesecake, key lime, and s’mores.
Letizia arrived at the Barnes & Noble where I was speaking as I was setting up. She opened her cooler and out came these incredibly lovely tarts with mermaid tails on them, and manta rays, and golden lockets, all made out of fondant – to celebrate the launch of my new book, DEEP BLUE. Letizia is lovely herself – so sweet and enthusiastic, and so talented.
I oohed and aahed and wanted to stuff myself right then and there, but the party hadn’t started. So, feigning good manners, I waited.
The event was so fun and bustling, and then I was whisked off to dinner, and I never got even one of the salted caramel chocolate tarts, when I’d planned to scarf at least half a dozen. First place I’m going next time I’m in the greater LA area? Tart Bites at 17233 Ventura Boulevard.
And the moral of this story? Good manners can sometimes be a very bad idea!
With best wishes,
